01

Rest is an action with a purpose

Falling behind describes a relationship to an expectation. Rest describes something your body or mind may need. They are not the same event, even when they occupy the same hour.

02

Some expectations are allowed to change

An expectation created under different conditions may no longer be a fair measure. The plan can be renegotiated without turning your need for recovery into a character judgment.

03

Put rest inside the system

  • Schedule it before depletion when possible.
  • Name what it is protecting.
  • Reduce transitions around it.
  • Avoid making rest conditional on finishing everything first.
  • Let recovery change what comes next.
04

Use neutral language

Try “I am protecting capacity” or “the plan changed” instead of “I wasted the day.” Neutral language leaves room for a useful next decision.

Put this into practice
